Welcome! El Fuego del Sol is in the Dominican Republic, less than an hour drive from the beautiful beaches of Punta Cana & La Romana and less than a 4-hour flight from Chicago.

This is one of the richest and poorest areas of the world. Our programs work to connect international tourists with Dominican people, and the history, culture, cuisine, and ecology of the island. Worktrips and day-tours are welcome. Help El Fuego del Sol make a difference in your own backyard. We have been featured in Conscious Choice magazine and on the NPR program Worldview.

Now a Contender for $300,000+ from National Geographic!

June 8, 2009. El Fuego del Sol is now a contender for one of 20 awards for US$300,000 to $500,000 to develop GeoTourism projects in the Caribbean, Central and South America. There are dozens of eligible projects on the mainland, but we are one of only a few in the Caribbean! Help us bring sustainable beneficial tourism to the island home of some of the poorest residents of the Western Hemisphere.

But why should El Fuego del Sol be selected for financing through the InterAmerican Development Bank and National Geographic? Our project is up and running while we are still in the Design Phase. We are hosting socially beneficial tours, holding cultural and historical events, teaching classes, and developing the property itself as we invite others to join our creative team!

How "Open-Source" are we? We will share our finances with you to help us make the best decisions. None of the project principals is receiving a paycheck until the project can profitably sustain administrative salaries. Principals are investing their time and/or money for a percentage of the project as a whole.

El Fuego del Sol has participated in the GeoTourism Challenge since the Challenge started in 2008. The competition is organized by National Geographic and changemakers.net. Financing is coordinated through the MIF and the InterAmerican Development Bank. Projects around the world are in the Challenge, but only projects in Central America, South America and the Caribbean are eligible for the US$10,000,000 in project finance.

GeoTourism is the norm in many countries. However, Dominican banks have NEVER financed a GeoTourism project. The Dominican banks say that EFdS does not fit into their categories since our purpose is helping others. Financing through the GeoTourism Challenge is the best opportunity for El Fuego del Sol to flourish and grow as the first GeoTourism project in the Dominican Republic!

The Power of Programming

Each of our programs is designed to be financially sustainable as it works to improve the social and ecological environments of the Dominican Republic. Programs create business opportunities, Fair Trade jobs, and long-term social solutions. Included in the expenses of each program is appropriate facility cost which goes to pay the current mortgage on the property. Expanded financing though the GeoTourism Challenge will be paid by expanding the financial effectiveness of each project that the new financing supports.

Sun Oven Manufacture, Distribution & Donation

We are working with local NGOs in the Dominican Republic to distribute Sun Ovens near the Haitian Border. Please contact us and mention Sun Ovens if you would like more information about this program. Sun Ovens fight deforestation and drastically improve the lives of women, children and families. Donations are tax deductible.

Your group could also run a clothing drive to create Fair Trade jobs in the Dominican Republic and finance the donations of Sun Ovens to Haiti. Details here.

can host 200+ campers at our site. Cabins are available for counselors or individual rental.

There was no campground in the area until we opened ours. Tent camping spaces are now available with all necessary services for the campers’ comfort. We will eventually have some campsites with solar powered electrical outlets for our campers’ convenience. Our upper campground/festival grounds will generally be used for primitive camping, but we will supply portable toilet facilities for larger events. We are now exploring how to incorporate composting technology in portable toilets. The campground can also supply sleeping space for volunteers who will work with churches and social service charities in the area. The camp is now open and would be perfect for work/service trips or just to come and relax. Isn't it time to camp in El Fuego del Sol?
